Members
The committee is made up of Morrisville residents with a wide range of educational, professional, and solid waste and recycling management backgrounds.

Purpose
The Town of Morrisville’s Environmental & Recycling Advisory Committee (MERC) is committed to community education about recycling and solid waste.  We are also in place for making sure the Town Council has all of the information they need to make sound decisions on solid waste and recycling collection for the Town.

Mission Statement
The Morrisville Environmental and Recycling Advisory Committee is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community by raising awareness of environmental issues and encouraging positive action.

Projects
Arbor Day Tree Planting
Each year, MERC shows its commitment to preserving the Earth and its natural resources by planting trees for Arbor Day.  In 2010, trees were planted at the Northwest Park in Morrisville.

Are You in Compliance with House Bill 1465?

During the 2005 legislative session, the N.C. General Assembly passed House Bill 1465 banning plastic bottles and other materials from disposal in landfills effective October 1, 2009. The text from the House Bill states that “No person shall knowingly dispose of the following solid wastes in landfills”:

Already in effect:

  • Used oil
  • Yard trash
  • White goods
  • Antifreeze (ethylene glycol)
  • Aluminum cans
  • Lead-acid batteries

Effective October 1, 2009:

  • Whole scrap tires
  • Motor vehicle oil filters
  • Recyclable rigid plastic containers (not motor oil containers)
  • Wooden pallets

Effective January 1, 2011:

  • Discarded computer equipment
  • Discarded televisions

According to the N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance, “North Carolina and the southeast are home to plastic plants hungry for material to make new products, so recycling your bottles is a great way to close the recycling loop!”

The Morrisville Environmental & Recycling Committee urges every Morrisville resident to be mindful of the new and existing regulations on recyclable materials and to make a diligent effort to be in compliance with the new State law.
